Privacy

There is no account, no newsletter, no advertising and no analytics service on this site. Three things touch your data at all, and they are all set out below.

1. One cookie

On your first page we set a single cookie named dcrc. It holds a short code derived from your address and the date — nothing else, and nothing that identifies you. Its only purpose is to tell a reader apart from a harvesting script, which is how the library stays open without a login. It lasts thirty days and it is never read by anyone but this server.

Because it is strictly necessary to deliver the service and to prevent abuse, we do not ask consent for it, and there is no consent banner to click. Blocking it will stop pages loading; if you read with cookies off, write to us and we will send you the database instead.

Your browser also keeps two small preferences on your own machine — light or dark, and parallel or single-language reading. Those never leave your device and never reach us.

2. Server logs

The web server records each request: the address it came from, the time, the page, the referring page and the browser's self-description. This is the ordinary record any web server keeps, and we use it only to keep the site running and to see when someone is hammering it. Logs roll over and are kept for about ten days, then deleted. They are not combined with anything else, not sold, and not shared, save where the law compels us.

3. Fonts from Google

The typefaces are served from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com. When a page loads, your browser fetches them directly from Google, and Google therefore sees your IP address and which page requested the font. We send them nothing else and receive nothing back. If you would rather not have that happen, block those two hosts — the site is designed to read perfectly well in your system's own serif.

We intend to serve the fonts from this server in time, which will remove the third party altogether.

What we do not do

No analytics, no tag manager, no pixels, no fingerprinting.
No advertising, and no data sold or given to anyone for their own use.
No profiles, and no automated decisions about you.
No accounts, so no names, no e-mail addresses, no passwords — unless you write to us yourself, in which case we keep your letter in order to answer it.

Your rights

We hold so little that most requests are answered in a sentence, but the rights are real ones: you may ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or erased, and complain to a supervisory authority. Children

The site is a scholarly reference and is not directed at children, and it collects nothing from anyone that would let us know their age.

Changes

If this notice changes, the date at the top changes with it. We will not quietly start collecting something that is not listed here.
