Moggallānavuttivivaraṇapañcikā

Moggallāna's own commentary on his own grammar — the pañcikā of the second Pali grammatical school, written by the Sinhalese elder Moggallāna in the 1100s CE.

Its real interest is that you can watch a Pali grammarian working from a Sanskrit model. Deokar sets out the chain: “The 12th-century Pali grammar by the Sinhalese elder Moggallāna called Moggallānavyākaraṇa and its auto-commentary Vutti are heavily indebted to the Cāndravyākaraṇa and its Vṛtti. Similarly the Moggallānapañcikā written by the same author is closely linked to the Cāndravyākaraṇapañjikā composed by the Sinhalese monk-scholar Ratnamati in the 10th century.” Behind Ratnamati's pañjikā of the 920s or 930s stands Dharmadāsa's Cāndravṛtti, and behind that the Cāndravyākaraṇa — Candragomin's fifth-century revision of Pāṇini.

Deokar argues that the two pañjikās have to be studied side by side, both to establish the text and to understand “the methodology adopted by Moggallāna to translate scholastic Sanskrit into Pali”. The same milieu produced Sāriputta's Candrālaṃkāra on Ratnamati's work, in the first quarter of the 1100s.

A note for anyone searching for it: the full title is Moggallānavuttivivaraṇapañcikā, and it is usually shortened to Moggallānapañcikā — a search on the long form alone finds nothing.
