Buddhaguṇagāthāvalī

Buddhaguṇagāthāvalī, “a garland of verses on the Buddha” — much the largest work in this group, more than 1,225 numbered verses, every one of them ending on the same refrain: buddhaṃ taṃ paṇamāmyahaṃ, “to that Buddha I bow”.

The author states the plan in his first verse: yatheva puppharāsimhā gantheyya mālā sobhanā, evaṃ buddhaguṇagāthā viraciṃ sahassādhikā — “just as a lovely garland may be strung from a heap of flowers, so have I composed more than a thousand verses on the qualities of the Buddha”. He then takes the Buddha's epithets one at a time, beginning from the canonical formula arahaṃ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno and going far past it into plain exclamation: Aho! Buddho! Aho! Suddho! Aho! Saṃsuddhamānaso!

The text names no author and no initiator, and that is a fact about the text, not a gap in the searching. A scan of its opening and closing found no ganthārambhakathā, no colophon and no place name anywhere in it, and no source on file names the work. No date can be given.
