Kaṅkhāvitaraṇīpurāṇa-ṭīkā

The older of the two subcommentaries on the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī. It is called porāṇa, “old”, for one reason only: to keep it apart from the Vinayatthamañjūsā, which Sāriputta's pupil Buddhanāga later wrote on the same text.

It is anonymous, and its title is a guess. The very brief introduction may be giving Līnapadavikāsaka as the name of the work, or may not.

Its date can only be expressed as later than someone else's. It quotes Vajirabuddhi extensively, so it is later than he is — and Vajirabuddhi himself is only bracketed at 450–600 CE, so no year can be put to this book at all. It also draws on the Porāṇaganthipada, the Ganthipada and the Anuganthipada, and once it preserves an opinion of the Thera Upatissa in a slightly fuller form than Vajirabuddhi's version of the same quotation — which is the kind of detail that makes a derivative book worth keeping.
